Is there any other way to transfer tape stuff to my computer from my old camcorder?

Yes there is. Pinnacle makes something called the Dazzle which is a analogue to digital converter. Roxio also has a product that will do the job. Watch the “Getting Your VHS Video onto Your Computer via the Dazzle” video and then click on the resources tab to find links to Pinnacle and Roxio.
